The owner of this green bay urban environment wanted a home that is fun, embraces family, and is 'ecoconsciously' set in the community. While remaining in the city was key for this growing family of six, maintaining the idealic ‘english garden’ integrity of their most cherished space - their yard - was most critical. A suspended bridge/library links the traditional brick home with the contemporary Miesian box which juts into the pastoral grounds, creating an intimate courtyard for family events. Detaching the two structures allowed critical sight lines of children playing to be maintained and subtly reduced the negative effect the building mass of a 3000 SF home offers on a narrow city lot. Large windows hardly separate the in/side with the out/side while polished plywood floors add to the earthen atmosphere.
